Danny Rohl is expected to take time over his next career move as speculation grows around the Sheffield Wednesday manager’s future.

Southampton, Red Bull Leipzig and Wolfsburg have all been monitoring developments with the 36-year old German who seems set to leave Hillsborough this summer.

Rohl was a leading contender to take over at Southampton in December after the sacking of Russell Martin.

Rohl has remained a coach of interest for Southampton, although there is no guarantee St Mary’s would be his preferred destination.

Will Still is set to be appointed as their next manager and Saints are also working to appoint Tim Lederer, from Hoffenheim, as their chief scout.

Other Premier League and German-based clubs are considering Rohl and suitors are expected to become clearer in the coming days

A former Bayern Munich and Germany coach, Rohl is prepared to bide his time as a number of top flight options could emerge with clubs also looking to change manager in the next few weeks.

Rohl told media last month that Wednesday had been informed of ‘his decision’ regarding his next move and it is widely understood he is keen to move on from Hillsborough.

Why Rangers are unlikely to appoint Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl – It’s a boost for the Owls

Danny Rohl shares devastating hint regarding his Sheffield Wednesday future, his 'top choice' is now clear

Rangers are unlikely to appoint Sheffield Wedneday’s Danny Rohl as manager due to the cost of his release clause.

According to Football Insider, the Scottish giants are unwilling to pay the fee required to get him out of his deal with the Owls, which runs until 2027.

The German coach’s future is up in the air following the end of the campaign, with speculation suggesting an exit from the Yorkshire outfit could be on the cards.

It was reported by The Athletic on Sunday evening that Rohl is considering his future with Sheffield Wednesday amid interest from several clubs.

Rangers’ Danny Rohl stance

It is believed that Rangers are unwilling to pay the multi-million pound fee required to release Rohl from his contract at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Premiership club are seeking a replacement for Philippe Clement for next season after coming second to rivals Celtic in the table by 17 points.

It has been claimed by Teamtalk that Rangers have whittled their options down to three candidates, including Russell Martin, Davide Ancelotti and former manager Steven Gerrard.

This will come as a further boost to the Owls, who will be keen to keep Rohl at Hillsborough for next season.

The 36-year-old has earned a lot of plaudits for his work with Sheffield Wednesday since joining in October 2023.

He oversaw a 12th place finish in the Championship this season, with the team missing out on a play-off place by 10 points.

Rohl took over the side in October 2023 with the team sitting bottom of the Championship table, and looking certain for relegation back to League One.

However, he led the club to a miraculous recovery that saw them finish 20th in the table last season.

Rohl’s side continued to improve into the following campaign, leading to a top half of the standings finish.

However, his future with the Owls is uncertain, with multiple options reportedly open to him for next season.

Rangers development is a positive step for Sheffield Wednesday

While there are still other clubs that could appoint Rohl, this is still a positive development for Sheffield Wednesday.

A departure from Hillsborough is still a likely outcome this summer, but this reduces the alternative options for the German for the time being, and gives the club more time to convince him to stay potentially.

Losing Rohl would be a huge blow given how much of an impact he’s had over the last 18 months or so.

It’s surprising that Rangers wouldn’t be willing to pay a fee for someone of his reputation, but it is still a bit risky to spend a lot on a coach these days given how short of a time span a lot of them tend to stay at one club.
