Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has admitted that he would like to return to coach in the Bundesliga “as soon as possible”.

Wednesday ended last season in 12th place under Rohl, but have been consumed by crisis since the end of the 2024/25 season, with EFL charges looming over wages that were paid late on two separate occasions throughout the season and two takeover bids from an American consortium having been rejected by the club’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri.

There have been persistent rumours of a breakdown in relations between Rohl and Chansiri, though these were denied by Rohl in January.

Rohl’s position has also been open to considerable speculation, with him being linked to the manager’s job at Southampton and Leicester City, among many others in England, as well as clubs in his home country.

In a wide-ranging interview with the German newspaper Bild, Rohl left little doubt that he sees his future as being away from Hillsborough.

Asked when he would be returning as a head coach in the Bundesliga, his reply couldn’t have been much more clear: “If it were up to me, as soon as possible.

“The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level. I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches.

“I have the good feeling that I’ve been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles.”

Although, his reply to a follow-up question about links to RB Leipzig was less transparent: “I don’t want to say anything about that.”

Rohl considers the interest from clubs in both England and Germany as “validation of my work”, adding that, “We’ll see what happens in the summer.”

He also talks extensively about the circumstances under which he arrived at Wednesday. Asked about the difference between coaching at Bayern Munich and with the German national team compared to going to Sheffield Wednesday with the club bottom of the table, he said, “Something like that doesn’t scare me; I wanted to build something.

“In the remaining 35 games, we picked up a total of 53 points and stayed in the league. That was sensational – and a historic season!”

Rohl gives no indication whatsoever throughout his interview that he has any interest in staying with Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

At the time of his appointment at Hillsborough on the 13th October 2023, they were well adrift at the foot of the Championship. He steered the team to 20th place by the end of the season, three points above the relegation places, and then to a comfortable 12th-place position in 2024/25.
