‘Key addition’ – Derby County urged to sign Premier League man by former player
Derby County target Craig Dawson would be a ‘key addition’ for the Rams, pundit Lee Hendrie believes.
Derby County have been linked with a move for the Wolves defender, as per Alan Nixon on his Patreon page. DCFC are preparing for another year in the Championship.
Dawson, 35, is out of contract at the end of the month and is due to become a free agent. He will be weighing up his options at this moment in time.
Ex-Rams man Hendrie has delivered his verdict to Football League World: “I know his age, but he’s a very good pro, a modern pro. He looks after himself and, again, has experience to [get them] where they want to go.
“We’ve seen players come out of the Premier League in the past that have stepped down and played in the Championship. He’d have to be managed well, which I’m sure Eustace will, but he’d be a really key addition to a Derby side that I think will be a lot more stable this season, and that’s why I think they’re looking to have some more experienced heads.
“They’ve got a fair few younger players, and that’s why I think they’re going down this route, particularly in that centre-back role where Dawson would play. I feel you could get a good season out of him, and then, who knows, maybe on from there, but bringing him in and having experience in the Championship is vital.”

Derby County could see Dawson as someone to boost their defensive ranks. If he joined, he would give DCFC more competition and depth at the back.
He would also inject some valuable experience into their squad. The Rochdale-born man has played over 500 games in his career to date.
Dawson has been on the books of Wolves since joining them back in 2023. He has featured on 61 occasions for the Midlands outfit and has chipped in with two goals from the back. However, he has fallen down the pecking order since Pereira came in to replace Gary O’Neil in December.

Derby County won’t have to pay a fee to land Dawson which makes any deal easier to strike. However, DCFC will have to bat away competition from Wrexham which may prove tough, with Nixon claiming on Patreon that the Red Dragons are keen as well.
