How much Steve Gibson would have to pay Sheffield Wednesday to bring Danny Rohl to Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough are searching for a Michael Carrick replacement and a host of names, including Danny Rohl, have been linked.
Jon Dahl Tomasson has commented on becoming Middlesbrough manager this week after we learned the Sweden boss had an interest in the role.
But the ex-Newcastle United player is one of several names who could be in line to replace Michael Carrick at the Riverside Stadium.
Steve Cooper is on Middlesbrough’s shortlist, but whether he would prefer a move outside of the UK remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, we revealed on Thursday that Danny Rohl has been discussed to become the next Boro boss, but he will not come cheap.
Danny Rohl Sheffield Wednesday release clause amid Middlesbrough links
Rohl has done a fantastic job at Sheffield Wednesday in the last two seasons despite internal struggles at the club.
The German helped the Owls avoid relegation in 2023/24 before guiding them to a mid-table finish this past campaign with limited backing.
Should Boro step up their interest in Rohl, however, his acquisition would set the Teessiders back a fair amount.
We have covered interest in the Wednesday manager for some time, with the likes of Southampton, Leicester City, and teams in Germany thought to have looked at him.
But as EFL Analysis learned back in March, Rohl has a release clause at Sheffield Wednesday, which is worth close to £5million.
Danny Rohl record vs Michael Carrick
Carrick joined Middlesbrough in 2022, taking them to 4th, 8th, and 10th-place finishes in the Championship.
The Englishman was in the dugout for 136 matches during his time with Boro, winning 63, drawing 24 and losing 49.
As for Rohl, he became Sheffield Wednesday manager on October 13, 2023.
The ex-Bayern Munich coach led the Owls on 89 occasions, winning 34, drawing 19 and losing 36.\
The punishment Sheffield Wednesday and Chansiri are now facing after EFL place embargo on the Owls
Sheffield Wednesday fans are being put through a nightmare time under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, and now, it’s about to get a whole lot worse.
Chaos has been brewing at Hillsborough for a while. Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay his Sheffield Wednesday players and staff in March, and then, for the second time this year, they went unpaid in May.
Sheffield Wednesday avoided punishment on the first occasion, but with more cashflow issues cited, the Yorkshire side are nailed on for a points deduction, and more worryingly, an embargo.
Wednesday fans have branded Chansiri as a ‘disgrace’ for letting it get to this situation, and even with talks of a takeover, it’s impossible to ignore the depressing future awaiting the Owls.
It means, unfortunately, heading into the 2025/26 transfer window, breaching the EFL regulations have placed the Championship side under a transfer embargo.
