Derby County have tied Liam Thompson down to a new deal amid reported interest from other Championship clubs.

Derby County finished 19th in the 2024/25 Championship season thanks to a remarkable transformation under John Eustace. With just 10 games remaining, DCFC fought their way to survival having embarked on a record-equalling losing streak prior to Eustace’s arrival.

It is necessary for Derby County to keep building on the base that brought them safety last season and it has now been confirmed that Liam Thompson will extend his stay at Pride Park.

The midfielder featured in 10 of the Rams’ final 14 games last season following Eustace’s arrival, performing well as part of a midfield trio alongside Ebou Adams and Harrison Armstrong.

As per reporter Dan Marsh (Mirror Transfer News Live, 01/07/25, 16:13), the 23-year-old has rejected interest from other Championship sides in favour of remaining at Pride Park, where he broke through the academy ranks during the 2021/22 campaign.

Thompson will be the third player to renew his contract at DCFC this summer with Matt Clarke and Craig Forsyth being confirmed previously. Kane Wilson’s contract was also automatically extended following Derby County’s survival.

However, with John admitting in the club’s recent fans forum that he would like to change shape back to his 4-2-3-1, it is likely that Thompson will find himself in a deeper role as part of the midfield two.

This is an area untouched so far by the Rams in the transfer window and it would be surprising if the they were to decide against majorly strengthening this area. Thompson’s extension will help DCFC toconsolidate their status as a Championship club but they are definitely in need of bolstering their midfield maestros.

“Tommo’s” Derby County journey continues

Thompson now heads into his fifth season at Derby County having made his debut under Wayne Rooney. Even then, he showed his capabilities of being a Championship player in moments, demonstrated by his excellent performance against promotion-winning Fulham at Pride Park.
