Wrexham set to sign international goalkeeper
Wrexham are set to sign former Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward after his release from the club, reports Nathan Salt.
Wrexham are gearing up for their inaugural season in the Championship. They secured back-to-back promotions from the National League to the second tier in just three years.
The Red Dragons impressed in League One last season, finishing 2nd and rarely looking out of place. However, the Championship poses a different kind of challenge, and the Welsh side will need to invest wisely during the summer transfer window.
Phil Parkinson’s squad must be strengthened if they are to compete at this higher level and some big names have been linked. Now, after the addition of Ryan Hardie, Wrexham are closing in on their second signing of the summer.
According to reporter Nathan Salt, outgoing Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward is set to undergo a medical with Wrexham. He is to join the club on a free transfer when his Leicester City contract runs out at the end of the month.
Ward will be joining the Welsh side as number two behind Arthur Okonkwo. The 32-year-old has managed just five appearances for the Foxes this season.
A very important number two
Despite coming in as Wrexham’s number two for this upcoming season, Ward is pretty much garenteed to get some gametime. This is because Okonkwo is very likely to be called up by Nigeria for this years African Cup of Nations.
The competition will be held between December 21st and January 18th halfway through this season. This means that Okonkwo would miss five league games and one FA Cup tie, should he be called up by the Super Eagles.
Ward would be getting a big chance to stake a claim as the clubs starting ‘keeper. He will certainly be an adequate replacement and has a lot of experience in the Championship.
Returning to Wales
Ward has not played in Wales in nearly 14 years, and the last time he did was during a loan spell with the club he is returning too. He played for Wrexham on loan from September 2011 to January 2012, during his Liverpool days.
Ward has gone onto spend the vast majority of his career in England bar a brief stint in Scotland. He has had several stints in the EFL, with Huddersfield Town, Morecambe and with the club he is leaving Leciester City.
