West Brom’s dream summer transfer window includes a Spurs favour for Ryan Mason and a new backline
Ryan Mason is an exciting appointment for West Brom, but the young coach has a lot of work to do to get the Baggies in shape ahead of the new season.
After Tony Mowbray failed to land a play-off spot last season, West Brom parted ways with the veteran manager and took their time to find his successor.
Once Ryan Mason had wrapped up his work at Tottenham Hotspur, winning the Europa League in the process, the 34-year-old was named as the Baggies’ new boss.
We’re led to believe Mason won’t get a huge transfer budget at West Brom, but there are a lot of holes in the squad he has inherited. So, with work to be done in the transfer market, here are a few ways the summer might go if Mason gets his wishes.

Defensive reinforcements needed for West Brom
There’s no denying that the West Brom squad is paper thin as it is, and players are still likely to move on this summer, too. Starting at the back, the Baggies desperately need a new goalkeeper, with Joe Wildsmith heavily criticised last season.
A cheap option in that area could be Freddie Woodman, who is one of the best free agents in the Championship this summer after departing Preston North End.
In front of the ‘keeper, Semi Ajayi has joined Hull City on a free, while Mason Holgate returns to Everton after his loan spell. New centre-backs are a must, then, and it sounds like West Brom could sign Nat Phillips from Liverpool to fill that gap.
West Brom are also linked with Harry Toffolo. The former Nottingham Forest man would be a brilliant capture if they can pull it off, but his wages will be fairly high.
Keeping Tom Fellows would be a dream for West Brom
It’s widely expected that Tom Fellows will leave West Brom this summer. The young winger almost joined Everton in January, and the Toffees are still believed to be keen on making a deal happen.
If West Brom could resist the approaches and retain Fellows, they’d be keeping hold of one of the best players in the Championship.
The 21-year-old topped the assist chart in the Championship last season with 14, and also bagged four goals. Replacing that kind of output is very difficult indeed, making Fellows just about priceless.

Spurs can lend Ryan Mason a player or two
Fellows staying would give West Brom strength on the right wing, but Mason may need to call in some favours to sort out the other side. We’re pretty sure Mason will go back to Spurs and borrow a player or two, and the acquisition of Mikey Moore on the left wing would be a very exciting move indeed.
Meanwhile, after his exploits in League One with Leyton Orient last season, it’s thought a slew of Championship sides have enquired about Jamie Donley. While Thomas Frank might give him a chance at Spurs, a loan move would be great for the player, and he’d give West Brom a real spark in the middle of the park.
The Baggies borrowed Will Lankshear in the latter half of last season, and while he didn’t get much chance to impress he could be given another go with Mason. Alternatively, the West Brom boss may decide a move for Dane Scarlett is the better option.
West Brom need more firepower
Speaking of strikers, West Brom have a distinct lack of firepower. Josh Maja bagged 12 goals last season, but missed the second half of the campaign through injury and it’s now thought he is likely to leave this summer.
A couple of options that fit the bill for West Brom are Portsmouth duo Colby Bishop and Callum Lang. The pair scored 11 and 10 goals respectively in 2024/25, and while Pompey would be eager to keep them, the Baggies would probably be able to lure one of them away for a relatively reasonable fee.
Meanwhile, QPR’s underrated gem Charlie Kelman could be available for transfer this summer. He’s another player who was on fire for Leyton Orient last season and ended up as League One’s top goalscorer. However, West Brom could take advantage of the uncertainty at QPR and snap up the US striker.
