Trade Idea Has Maple Leafs Doing Sign-And-Trade Dealing Marner to Vegas
The Toronto Maple Leafs are likely to lose Mitch Marner in free agency, so Toronto could look to make a sign-and-trade.
The website PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool lets users create their own trades. One user proposed a deal that would see the Maple Leafs deal Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade.
Maple Leafs acquire:
- William Karlsson
- 2026 second-round pick
Golden Knights acquire:
- Mitch Marner
- 2025 sixth-round pick
The proposed deal would see Toronto sign Marner to an eight-year deal worth $14 million per season. The Maple Leafs would also pay the signing bonus this year, which makes the actual money given to Marner cheaper this year, which makes the return more.
The Maple Leafs would acquire a second-round pick, which is needed as Toronto has traded a ton of its picks. Toronto would also acquire Karlsson, who has two years left on his eight-year, $47.2 million deal. Karlsson would help replace Marner’s offense as he could be Toronto’s second-line center, which is a need for the Maple Leafs. He recorded 9 goals and 20 assists for 29 points in 53 games. However, he can be a 50+ point player.
In return, Toronto would give up a sixth-round pick and Marner. Marner is the top free agent available, and he would sign a new eight-year deal. Marner would be a top-line player with Vegas and would add more offense to the lineup. He recorded 27 goals and 75 assists for 102 points in 81 games last season with Toronto, which was a career-high.
Insider: Maple Leafs Will Explore Sign-And-Trade For Marner
Marner will be the top free agent available, and all signs point to him leaving in free agency.
With the Maple Leafs likely to lose Marner for nothing, Toronto could try for a sign-and-trade to get something back in return. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff, he expects Maple Leafs’ general manager Brad Treliving to explore a sign-and-trade.
“Just look at Brad Treliving’s history. Matthew Tkachuk, sign and trade,” Seravalli said on DailyFaceoff Live. “It is a little bit different because Tkachuk had one year of restricted free agency left, so he kind of had to get traded. Don’t expect a Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar-like return.
“That is not going to happen,” Seravalli added. “But could they jump the market and find a situation where Marner wants to pre-negotiate with and everybody gets a win-win? The Leafs get a little something in return. That team gets a chance to get ahead of it and get the guy that they want and Marner gets an eighth year. It is entirely possible.”
NHL Insider Claims Marner is Leaving Maple Leafs
Although many reports have indicated that Marner will be hitting the open market, it hasn’t been ruled out that he could return.
However, NHL insider Andy Strickland reported on June 13 that Marner will not be returning to the Maple Leafs.
“Can confirm Mitch Marner will not be returning to Toronto. Will be playing for a new team come next season,” Strickland wrote on X.
If that is indeed the case, a sign-and-trade now could be something the Maple Leafs look to explore.
he Toronto Maple Leafs will look to add a centerman to their roster as it’s their biggest need entering the offseason.
