y County set to make £1m move for Birmingham City defender
Birmingham City could be about to lose defender Dion Sanderson with Derby County ready to make a move, according to Pete O’Rourke.
Birmingham City are braced for another exciting summer window as they return to the Championship. After taking League One by storm last year, BCFC have their eyes on the top six once again this campaign.
Chris Davies’ side spent heavily last season, partially in preparation for the Championship this upcoming year. However, if the Blues are expected to bring in more players this summer, they will need to cut down on their current squad.
With that in mind, Derby County could be about to give Birmingham a chance to do that. According to Pete O’Rourke, reporting via X, Derby are set to make a move to sign defender Dion Sanderson.
BCFC are reportedly willing to let Sanderson leave the club this summer for a fee of around £1m. Sanderson was not a part of Birmingham’s promotion-winning side as he spent the second half of the campaign on loan with Blackburn Rovers.
Sanderson made 12 appearances for Rovers in the Championship last year. He was also a key player for Birmingham City in the last two seasons before their relegation in 2024.
Eustace’s man
During his time at Birmingham City, John Eustace clearly took a very big liking to Dion Sanderson. Eustace has been keen on reuniting with the defender ever since he was sacked in 2023.
He got his wish in January when he brought Sanderson to Blackburn Rovers, only to leave for Derby just a month later. Now he wants to reunite once again with his former man.
It felt inevitable that Sanderson would be linked with a move to Derby this summer. However, it remains to be seen if a move comes to fruition in the coming weeks.
No room for Sanderson?
Centre-back is one of the positions that Birmingham City will be looking to make additions in this summer. Christoph Klarer and Krystian Bielik are two top defenders, but behind them, they have very little depth.
Grant Hanley is leaving after his short-term deal expires in the summer, despite only joining in January. Ben Davies is also looking set to leave and return to Rangers after his loan spell this year.
There is certainly a world where Sanderson would return to Birmingham City’s squad this season. However, it is unknown whether he would be happy to make up the numbers.
