Exclusive: Derby, Blackburn, Millwall plot transfer for Charlton's Thierry Small

‘Deal Offered’: Charlton Athletic look to land Millwall and Blackburn Rovers fatal transfer blow

Championship clubs including Millwall and Blackburn Rovers have been linked with a transfer move for the Charlton Athletic man this summer.

Charlton Athletic have officially confirmed that full-back Thierry Small has been offered a new deal to stay at the club following promotion to the Championship.

Charlton Athletic want to keep Thierry Small at the club.

The 20-year-old’s current contract at The Valley is set to expire this summer but manager Nathan Jones had made no secret of his desire to keep the promising youngster at the London outfit next term. The defender’s potential availability as a free agent had sparked transfer talk with no shortage of Championship clubs linked.

Small initially arrived at Charlton Athletic in February 2023, putting pen to paper on a short-term deal until the end of that season. The Addicks then triggered a 12 month extension in that deal last summer.

Thierry Small offered new Charlton Athletic contract

The club shared an update on the future of first team players following the conclusion of the season last weekend with the 1-0 play-off final win over Leyton Orient. In the statement shared on Friday, Charlton Athletic confirmed: “Thierry Small, whose contract is set to expire this summer, has been offered a new deal.”
Small would be available without a transfer fee if he doesn’t extend his stay at Charlton Athletic. The player started the play-off final last weekend and was front and centre of celebrations after full time, going into the crowd to take a flag with the club’s emblem and waving it on the pitch.
What Nathan Jones has said on Theirry Small's Charlton Athletic future as Millwall chase transfer
It remains to be seen whether Small signs that extension but the Addicks are clearly looking to land a fatal blow to any circling clubs. Earlier this month, Millwall, Preston North End and Oxford United were all touted as potential suitors for the player. In an update on that transfer saga, Football League World added Blackburn Rovers to the list of clubs eyeing up a swoop for Small ahead of the play-off final.

Addicks star ‘would love to stay’ at The Valley

Jones did not want to bite when asked about Preston North End interest in the player last month. He said: “No contact from anyone. Part of my remit is to work with young players and develop young players to make them assets for the football club. There you go.”

The former England under-20 international has also remained tight-lipped on his future. Speaking earlier in 2025, having scored his first goal of the season in a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town at The Valley in a dramatic 96th minute winner, Small hinted that he would like to continue his progress at the club. He said: “It’s currently under negotiations and I’m just letting my agent deal with it. We will just see where it goes from there. I would love to stay.”

Should Small leave the club, Charlton Athletic have been linked with a move for Blackpool defender Jordan Gabriel last week as a potential replacement. The 26-year-old is also out of contract this summer and Reading, Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Port Vale and Mansfield also named as clubs interested in his services.

In other news, Nathan Jones warns Charlton Athletic fans not to be ‘idiots’ ahead of Championship campaign.
