Dillon Dingler reached base four times and hit a two-run homer to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 7-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.
The Tigers (38-20) have won five in a row and play the Royals (30-28) twice more this weekend in Kansas City.
Dingler launched a two-run homer in the second inning off Royals starter Seth Lugo, then added a walk and two singles. His RBI single in the eighth scored Wenceel Pérez and provided a key insurance run.
“I think it’s who he is,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters in Kansas City after the game. “He’s done this for a while now. He finds a way to contribute on both sides of the ball. He’s a really good catcher. He’s producing offensively. He’s sort of tucked away at the bottom of the order, and you need big at-bats there to roll the lineup over. He’s got power, he’s got some discipline. He walked tonight. That’s a good step in the right direction. He’s just an overall talented player who’s displaying it every night.”
Tigers starter Casey Mize labored through 3 1/3 innings in an uneven outing. The defense both helped and hurt him.
