Danny Rohl reveals new Sheffield Wednesday transfer update

‘Too great a risk’ – Explanation on why club won’t appoint Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Röhl

On Tuesday, we covered a report from Germany’s largest newspaper, Bild, which stated Danny Röhl has held talks with Werder Bremen.

The Sheffield Wednesday manager is keen on leaving the Championship club this summer, and has made that clear during multiple interviews with the German media following the end of his club’s season.

Indeed, at points Röhl has spoken like he’s already left Sheffield Wednesday, despite having a contract with the club lasting until June 2027.

Bild reported the manager had been one of the main candidates for Werder Bremen but talks didn’t go in a positive direction.

The same German newspaper now report Horst Steffen is set to sign a three year contract with the Bundesliga club. When looking at why other candidates fell away, they state: ‘A big advantage over Kwasniok and option number 3, Danny Röhl (36/Sheffield Wednesday): Steffen is affordable for Werder Bremen, while the other coaching options would have required transfer fees in the millions. Too great a risk, too great a burden.’

So the Sheffield Wednesday manager was third choice but a move wouldn’t have been possible anyway because he’s considered too expensive. According to previous reports, Röhl has a release clause worth around £5m.

Given no club has been entirely convinced on the manger yet, the idea of paying such a fee for what many consider a gamble is proving a roadblock.

Sheffield Wednesday fans are in complete agreement as claim made on 'messy' Danny Rohl situation

Speculation continues to link Danny Rohl with a return to Germany, and we reckon the Sheffield Wednesday manager would be tempted to take some familiar faces with him.

Sheffield Wednesday had a good thing going with Danny Rohl, and there’s no denying the young coach has helped to establish the Owls in the Championship during his two years in charge.

However, that relationship has frayed in recent weeks due to Rohl’s rather public desire to leave the club in pursuit of bigger and better things.

The latest rumour suggests Werder Bremen are ready to offer Rohl a job, and as available roles in the Championship disappear, it does seem the Bundesliga is Rohl’s best option now.

If and when Rohl does go, it will be interesting to see whether he causes further disruption for the Owls or leaves quietly. With that in mind, here are three players we believe the 36-year-old would take with him.

Three Sheffield Wednesday players Danny Rohl will want in Germany

Pierce Charles

We know multiple top clubs are looking at Pierce Charles ahead of the summer, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur among the interested parties.

In the latter stages of the season, Charles overtook James Beadle as Wednesday’s number one goalkeeper, and he’s poised to be a key man next season… if he stays, that is.

Obviously, Rohl is a big fan of the youngster. And, in Germany, he could offer Charles the one thing he needs the most, which is a full season of being number one.

Charles is unlikely to get that if he pursues a Premier League move, but the opportunity to step up to a bigger league and stay with Rohl may be too much to turn down for the Northern Irishman.

Svante Ingelsson

It was an interesting first season in England for Svante Ingelsson, who looked brilliant at times, but also struggled to find consistency and hold down a regular spot in Rohl’s team.

However, Rohl has spoken (via the Sheffield Star) before about the qualities the Swedish midfielder offers, saying: “His position is between six, eight and 10, he travels all over the pitch. We know what we get from him, he is physical, he makes powerful deep runs. It is a different profile.”

That versatility, twinned with Ingelsson’s brilliant engine and intense work rate make him an ideal fit for Rohl’s system. He’s likely to be much better in his second season in the Championship, but Rohl may want to steal him away and throw him into the Bundesliga instead.

Djeidi Gassama

One of the most exciting players in Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday side this season has been Djeidi Gassama, with the young winger terrorising defences in the second tier.

At just 21-years-old, Gassama has so much more room to improve, and he’s one of the players we would expect to explode in the Championship for 2025/26. However, Wednesday will need to fight to keep him this summer.

He’s the kind of player who could have a real impact in the Bundesliga, where the football is of a slightly slower, more measured pace most of the time. We’ve seen in the recent past how players like Leroy Sane, Michael Olise, and even Serge Gnabry have excelled in Germany, and Gassama could be next.

What we know about Danny Rohl’s situation

Rohl’s situation this summer has been a fascinating one already. It had looked like he would be chasing the Southampton and Leicester City jobs, but with those roles now gone, Rohl’s options are narrowing.

It’s also interesting because Rohl is still under contract at Sheffield Wednesday, and Dejphon Chansiri is not about to make it easy for him to leave.

There’s still a good chance Rohl stays. But, whether that would actually be a good thing or not is another matter, with Sheffield Wednesday fans starting to fall out of love with their manager.

It certainly seems Rohl would prefer a return to Germany now, and there are options available to him. The key for Wednesday is to find the right man to replace him if and when he departs.
