Latest news emerges as senior Sheffield Wednesday quartet wait on contract extension fate

Sheffield Wednesday quartet Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Anthony Musaba and Pol Valentin are still yet to be informed of their contract fates, as per The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday players will be more than familiar with how contract renewals work by now, or at least those who have been around a while will be. SWFC regularly enter the off-season with numerous players out of contract.

Dejphon Chansiri leaves such matters until after the season is done and while it allows for a focus on on-pitch matters, it doesn’t do a lot to help the almost constant uncertainty at Hillsborough.

This summer is no different, with several Owls seeing their deals expire. There are some who have extension options in their contracts though, and those are the first to be decided on at most clubs.

However, The Star reports that Sheffield Wednesday quartet Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Anthony Musaba and Pol Valentin are yet to be informed of what their futures hold despite having 12-month options in their deals.

It means that, at this moment in time, only 16 players are contracted to SWFC beyond the end of June and six of those are under 21.

There is no indication of when such calls will be confirmed.

Big names among waiting players

Sheffield Wednesday have some notable players who could be heading out the exit door this summer and Windass, Smith and Musaba are among them. The trio have options in their deals, but things don’t seem to be as cut and dry as that given the wait for clarity over their futures.

Windass was the Owls’ top scorer in the 2024/25 campaign with 13 goals, also chipping in with five assists. Smith ranked 2nd, scoring eight, one more than Djeidi Gassama and two more than Callum Paterson.

Musaba registered more assists than anyone with six, though several players were tied on five. Though a somewhat frustrating player at times, he’s a sellable asset for SWFC.

As for Spaniard Valentin, he found form and minutes increasingly hard to come by as the season progressed but is a versatile asset having operated as a wing-back or full-back.

Sheffield Wednesday uncertainty

It has been easy to forget the strides made by Sheffield Wednesday over the season. They finished in a comfortable mid-table position after scrapping for safety in the 2023/24 campaign.

However, the overwhelming feeling entering the summer is one of uncertainty with several factors at play.

Not only are numerous senior players out of contract, but manager Danny Rohl seems destined to leave. There is yet to be clarity communicated from the club though as rumours run rife and the German discusses his prospects elsewhere.

There are also questions over transfer plans and the ownership of the club, with SWFC chief Chansiri coming under dire again in recent months.
