Chicago Bears considering Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver for head coach role
The Chicago Bears are looking at six head coaching candidates according to The Athletics’ Dianna Russini.
The Miami Dolphins have lacked defensive stability in the Mike McDaniel era — and could be facing another change at defensive coordinator if Anthony Weaver lands a head coaching job in the coming weeks.
Dianna Russini, senior reporter for The Athletic, singled Weaver out in a recent column as a name to watch for the Chicago Bears coaching job. She mentioned that Bears general manager Ryan Poles has been doing homework on Mike Vrabel, Detriot Lions coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury — and “particularly Weaver.”
Miami’s defense ranks third in yards allowed per game (310.6) and eighth in points per game (20.8) under Weaver, who was asked about preparing for possible coaching interviews earlier this week.
“I’m so focused right now on just controlling what we can control, beating the Jets, and praying that we get the help we need in order to continue this run, because I think if we can get in, if we’re blessed with that opportunity, we can make some noise,” he said.
The Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus in late November and have lost 10 straight games since beginning the year 4-2. Weaver has 13 years of coaching experience — including two years as the assistant head coach with the Baltimore Ravens — and would provide defensive stability.
That said, it’ll be interesting to see if Chicago declines to hire a coach with an offensive background despite averaging just 17.9 points per game with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams leading an offense that struggled throughout the 2024 season.
Tyler “Snoop” Huntley will start this Sunday for the Miami Dolphins as they travel to East Rutherford, New Jersey, to take on the New York Jets. Mike McDaniel and Tua Tagovailoa confirmed during their Friday media availability. It will be Huntley’s second-consecutive start and his fifth of the year. While Tagovailoa will miss his sixth start this season — the most of his NFL career.
Here’s what McDaniel said during the first portion of today’s media session after calling Tagovailoa’s availability for Sunday “unlikely.”
