Werner must leave Tottenham permanently after ineffectual 4/10 performance v Newcastle – View
Tottenham Hotspur failed to arrest their slump as they suffered a 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in North London.
Despite an early lead through Dominic Solanke, Newcastle scored twice to take all three points and leave Spurs winless in four games. Tottenham have won only two of their previous 11 matches.
Tottenham did give a good account of themselves and could have gotten something from the match as they pushed for an equaliser, but it never came.
Manager Ange Postecoglou praised his team for showing character, hailing the general performance. However, one player who stuck out like a sore thumb was attacker Timo Werner.
The German international started on the left flank and was kept quiet by Tino Livramento. The former RB Leipzig star played three inaccurate crosses and lost possession seven times in his 62 ineffective minutes on the field.
His shambolic performance drew the ire of fans and national publications, digging him out for a scathing review.
The Evening Standard gave the on-loan star a 4/10 rating, saying, “Ineffectual again on his first start since Postecoglou criticised his performance against Rangers. Lasted an hour but did little to suggest he will keep getting chances.”
After being blasted by Postecoglou following his egregious performance versus Rangers, Werner has not managed to raise his game and still looks a shadow of the player who tormented Bundesliga defences for fun.
Werner should leave Spurs permanently this summer – View
The fact that Spurs considered making Werner’s deal permanent is befuddling. He was not a good enough target, and his returns on the pitch have been diabolical.
In over 20 appearances this season, he has only managed one goal, and his overall gameplay is chaotic. He needs to be one of the first players out of the door this summer.
There are several attractive options in the market that Spurs can sign. Bayern Munich’s Mathy Tel is looking for a new stomping ground while Nicolas Williams remains on the transfer market.
