Colchester United: What we know about the possible new owner
AN American businessman could become the next owner of Colchester United.
A statement was released this morning by the club confirming Colchester United chairman Robbie Cowling is in advanced talks to sell the club to US-based consortium Lightwell Sports Group.
Mr Cowling also stated the discussions had been taking place “for some time” regarding the sale of the club.
Lightwell Sports Group is owned by American businessman Tim Foley.
There is not much information about the group online except a website which has a 2025 copyright.
According to Google, when searching for ‘Tim Foley’ and ‘Lightwell’, it suggests a website called Lightwell Development.
It’s a New York based property development firm which Mr Foley has owned since 2020 has created more than 100 apartments last year.
After searching the Florida Department of States’ records for businesses, it suggests Mr Foley set up a business called Lightwell Sports LLC on August 20, 2024, alongside three other managers.
The LLC has was closed by its owners on April 29 because it is no longer active in the Florida state.
Mr Foley’s LinkedIn profile states he has previously worked for the United World Wresting group as a senior manager of media operations.
Colchester United say they will be making no further comment while the legal and regulatory processes are ongoing.
