On this day (May 1st) in 1999 the Sky Blues, under Gordon Strachan, were coming towards the end of their Premier League season and needing a point to be sure of retaining their top flight status for another year.
However, they needed a win today against Wimbledon as they had managed to lose their last three league games 2-0 at Everton, 2-1 at home to Middlesbrough and 1-0 at Leicester City. The Wombles were under the caretaker managership of future (briefly) Sky Blue Mick Harford (now a CCFPA member) following Joe Kinnear‘s heart attack.
The Sky Blues allayed fears of the drop with a win by the odd goal in three and were set fair by half time with two goals in the first half hour of the game.
First Darren Huckerby ended his fourteen game goal drought sixteen minutes in by winning the race to a lovely through ball from George Boateng, beating the offside trap to slot home. Next, after 28 minutes, Darren’s striking partner (and now fellow CCFPA member) Noel Whelan found the net with a
smart finish in the box (also made by George) to ensure City were on top for well over an hour of the game.
