Norwich City transfers: Thorup hints at defensive signing
Johans Hoff Thorup has hinted that Norwich City’s defensive department could have a new look next season as he approachesne a busy summer transfer window.
The Canaries are currently well-stocked at centre-back, with Callum Doyle, Shane Duffy, Ruairi McConville and Jose Cordoba to choose from for head coach Thorup.
Doyle is set to return to parent club Manchester City at the end of his season-long loan at Carrow Road, however, while 33-year-old Duffy has been linked with a move away from the club.
That could open the door to an addition when the campaign is over, believes the Dane, as his side prepares for another active round of recruitment.
“There could be players that we are not talking about right now that will be a part of that mixture,” he said. “You never know. There could also be players from that group of players that will leave this summer, you never know.
“So I think that what we have to get to is the end of the season, make sure that we do that in a good way, get back here together on the first day of training and know what we have to deal with.
“Then we’ll find out during pre-season, a little bit like last summer, where we rotated a lot and gave a lot of playing minutes to a lot of players.”
City have often been let down by the defensive side of their game this season, with an impressive attacking output cancelled out by a series of errors at the back.
Thorup says the responsibility for that is shared, as he looks for answers going into the 2025-26 campaign.
“I think there are many ways to look at it,” he continued. “When we look at the defensive stats, we are an average team in the league. But when we look at the goals we have conceded, we are not average, we are below that.
“That’s obviously not good enough, when we perform to a certain standard but the output is below that. That should not be the case. It is a collective approach, defending, but of course sometimes it also comes down to an individual decision.
“You have to have the right mindset to defend, you have to do whatever it takes to defend in moments. I think we’ve probably been a little bit too soft in some of the moments.”
“The worst thing” – Exclusive: Sky Sports pundit raises double Norwich City concern
Don Goodman has highlighted Norwich City’s defensive issues as the key reason why they’re not in the mix for promotion this year.
The Canaries have scored more than any side in the Championship this season except for Leeds United, with a total of 63 from 42 games.
An average of 2.5 goals per game is a great record, and should have the team in the battle for a top six finish.
However, a 2-1 loss to Burnley on Friday night has left them nine points adrift of Coventry City with only four fixtures to go.
Don Goodman highlights Norwich City issues
Goodman has criticised Norwich’s defensive issues so far this season as a big reason why Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side aren’t in the play-off fight.
He’s also highlighted the team’s poor record against the top five, losing seven of their 10 games this season, as a sign that they’re just not at that level at the moment, despite their goal-scoring form.
“I saw Norwich lose 2-1 at Bristol City four games before they lost 2-1 at Burnley, and what I see is a really good team when they’ve got the ball in the middle third and the attacking third,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
“But what I see is a team that just shoot themselves in the foot time after time by trying to play out from the back, getting it wrong, conceding lots of silly goals.

“Their defensive record is never going to allow them to be challenging at the top.
“And when you look at their record against the top five, the five best teams in the league at the minute after 42 games, they’ve played 10, lost seven and drawn three.
