Joakim Lindström has led Skellefteå to two Swedish Championship gold medals and is the club’s top scorer. He also has a World Championship bronze medal with Tre Kronor from 2014. In 2023 and after 526 regular season matches, the 41-year-old ended his career.
On Saturday afternoon, it was time to pay tribute to Lindström – and in a big way. Before the match against league leader Brynäs, his shirt was hoisted to the ceiling. Lindström is only the second player in Skellefteå to have his shirt hoisted to the ceiling, the first being Jimmie Ericsson.
– When I started playing, I couldn’t imagine this, that the number ten shirt would be hoisted up to the ceiling. It’s a fantastic day for me, says an emotional and tearful Joakim Lindström in his acceptance speech.
But there was no victory for the home team Skellefteå.
Brynäs dominated from the start and won 5–1, including two goals by Tyler Vesel.
