Littrell and Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel were teammates at Oklahoma. On the 2000 Sooner national championship squad, Heupel (quarterback) and Littrell (fullback) were team captains.
Littrell returned to his alma mater in 2023, joining Brent Venables’ staff as an offensive analyst. In 2024, Littrell was named offensive coordinator after Jeff Lebby‘s departure to become head coach at Mississippi State.
Following a 35-9 loss to South Carolina in Week 8, Littrell was dismissed as OC by Venables. At the time, Oklahoma was averaging just 112.1 yards rushing per game and 176.0 yards per game passing — last and second-last in the SEC, respectively. The Sooners averaged 22.1 points through 7 games, second-worst in the conference.
Littrell was head coach at North Texas from 2016-22, posting a 44-44 record. He took the Mean Green to 6 bowl games in 7 seasons. Littrell was his own play-caller at North Texas and the Mean Green were frequently among the top offenses in Conference USA.
Littrell has been coaching since 2002, with earlier stops at Kansas, Texas Tech, Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina in various roles.
