West Brom loanee who scored stunner before mid season departure set for European move

Jeremy Sarmiento’s opening games for West Brom hinted that they may have got their hands on a gem.

One of only a handful of signings in the summer of 2023, the Ecuador international who began his youth career with Charlton Athletic looked to be a real player.

Flicks and tricks, he excited West Brom fans as he rattled in a goal against Middlesbrough.

But his short six month loan at Albion would be littered with injuries, substitute appearances and disappointment, as he was recalled by his parent club Brighton before being sent out on loan again to Ipswich Town.

There was his stunning winner at Cardiff City that will be remembered by Baggies fans – but the winger failed to live up to his early billing.

After helping Ipswich to promotion, he did the same again with Burnley before returning to Brighton earlier this summer.

But it seems he may have a future away from Brighton according to the latest reports.

It has been claimed that the ex-Albion loanee came close to joining Brazilian side Cruzeiro recently. The two clubs had agreed a fee for a permanent switch and personal terms had also been ironed out.

However, Sarmiento backed out of the move at the last minute as he changed his mind on living in South America.

He wants to remain in Europe at this point in his career. It has also been reported that despite the u-turn he will depart Brighton this summer – with Serie A side Bologna said to be interested.
