Chris Billam-Smith on Ellie Scotney, Sir and Vitality Stadium plans
I’VE finally recovered from some New York induced jet-lag. It was mainly the late night of celebrating mixed with an early morning flight that did it.
Madison Square Garden is now right at the top of the list of venues I want to box in. The production they have set up, the atmosphere you people, my incredible support, could create would be phenomenal. New York anyone? I’ll do my best.
Talking of stunning venues to box in, AFC Bournemouth revealed the new stadium plans and to say it has got everyone a little bit excited would be a huge understatement.
(Image: AFC Bournemouth)I couldn’t make the local residents meeting on Tuesday night due to a last-minute family illness but the visuals of the ground look astounding. A double tier for the south stand, a stately fanzone and all four corners to be filled with seating. It’s going to be a spectacular stadium fitting for a club playing its football in Europe.
On Wednesday it was the final day of a former school teacher of mine at Avonbourne Academy (previously Portchester School), Mr Rod Clayton (Sir). I’m sure many readers will know the man, the legend.
Anyone who has attended that school in the last 45 years will have their own memories of Sir, all of which will be funny and admirable. Everyone I’ve ever spoke to about knowing Sir, has always spoke so highly of him, his teaching, the respect they have for him and of course, his trademark “Woooahhh, you boy, to me” catchphrase.

He has a way with his students that can’t be taught, a way in which he can calmly discipline you without the need for a raised voice whilst still keeping you on side and willing to listen.
The school arranged a guard of honour for him on Wednesday which myself, the pupils and his colleagues were all involved in and we gave him a reception deserving of the incredible legacy he leaves. Everybody lined up through reception, outside, up the road and round the corner, clapping and cheering for an honourable man.
He is everything I wish my sons to grow up to be and more. A man of morals, understanding, integrity, honour, manners and humour. I am so grateful to have met such a man who has had a hugely positive influence on so many lives.
All the very best in retirement Sir. Thank you, from all the students who’s lives you have improved from being in it. We’re forever indebted to you.
