Sky Blues goal scoring legend to appear at Coventry club

Former Scotland forward will regale fans with stories from his time in the city

A Coventry City goal scoring legend will share stories from his time in the city at a popular working men’s club. David Speedie, who wore the Sky Blue between 1987 and 1991, bagging over 30 goals along the way, will appear at Walsgrave Working Men’s Club in September.

The Scotland striker came to Cov just after they’d won the FA Cup prompting then David Speedie’s then manager, the late and legendary John Sillett, to describe the club as now “shopping at Harrods” instead of “Woolworths,” due to his goal scoring exploits at Chelsea and hefty price tag.

He became popular due to spectacular goals, including several chipped efforts, as well as his feisty style of play – loved by the Sky Blue contingent, if not opposition defenders.

Walsgrave Club’s Facebook page states: “Join us for an unforgettable evening with football legend David Speedie on Friday, 26th September. A true Sky Blues icon David Speedie dazzled fans with his electrifying performances.

“From a stunning goal on his home league debut against Spurs to a breathtaking hat-trick in a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Boro. During his debut season for Coventry City he left an indelible mark.”

It adds: “Don’t miss this rare chance to hear captivating stories from David’s illustrious career and get your copy of his new book, The David Speedie Story, available for purchase and signing at the event. Hosted by our friends at Sky Blue Fans TV.”
