Barry Bannan sends heartfelt message to Josh Windass as Sheffield Wednesday exit confirmed

Chaos has followed Sheffield Wednesday throughout the summer transfer window, with several players jumping ship.

After finishing in 12th position in the Championship last term, Sheffield Wednesday are losing a lot of their attacking talent.

Amid the ongoing financial problems and the three-window transfer ban, winger Anthony Musaba joined Samsunspor, and his exit was closely followed by Djeidi Gassama completing his move to Rangers for £2.2 million.

EFL Analysis even exclusively revealed that Danny Rohl is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday after his return to training didn’t go down well with the squad.

Two more players from Rohl’s squad have also seen their departures from Hillsborough confirmed, with Josh Windass and Michael Smith seeing their contracts terminated by mutual consent.

Wednesday fans were dealt another huge blow this summer after watching Smith and Windass leave, two players who scored 20 Championship goals between them in 2024/25.

An exit was always mooted for Windass, with Dejphon Chansiri’s failure to pay the players on time leading to unrest among the squad.

So, after an incredible five years in Wednesday colours, the former Rangers attacker is on the lookout for his next challenge.

But whilst that will fill the 31-year-old with excitement, Windass is sad about leaving S6, making his feelings known in a heartfelt post on Instagram.

He wrote: “Wow. Five and a half seasons at this incredible football club, I can’t explain just how much I have enjoyed playing for this club, representing the badge and the people of Sheffield.

“To the staff that have worked with me behind the scenes, to the players, and to the supporters – I can not thank you enough for the love and support you have given me during the time I have been here.

“I can categorically tell you without any hesitation that I have given 100% in every single day in training session and at every game.

“My goal is to always give supporters moments to remember when they go home from a game, and hopefully that is what I have done and I hope you remember me that way. I will never ever forget Sheffield Wednesday and for sure I’ll be a fan for life. Thank you again and hopefully I’ll see you again soon.”

In the replies, there was no surprise to see Sheffield Wednesday legend Barry Bannan issue his heartfelt response to the news, writing: “What a player and guy u will be missed a friend forever,” accompanied by the sad face and love heart emojis.
