Liam Delap: Chelsea rocked with strong fee demand for striker target as Ipswich make clear plan over January sale

Liam Delap transfer question raised at Everton after what’s happened at Ipswich

Everton have been questioned by Stephen Warnock for the decision not to consider signing Liam Delap in the summer.

The Blues swooped in to sign Armando Broja after Ipswich had pulled out of a loan deal for the Chelsea star (Daily Mail, 31 August).

However, the Albanian has struggled with injuries at Goodison Park, while Delap has been superb for the Tractor Boys, scoring eight goals in 19 Premier League matches since arriving from Manchester City.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (6 January, 12:14 pm), Warnock criticised the Toffees’ recruitment, saying: “They brought in Broja, who was injured.

“Why would you sign a player who’s injured when there’s pressure on you? Another strange signing. Why didn’t they look at Liam Delap?”

Armando Broja to turn things around at Everton?

Right now, it is unlikely that the Blues exercise the option to buy that they have for the Chelsea loanee.

The 23-year-old has struggled with injury during his time at Goodison Park and left the 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth after 30 minutes due to another setback.

That was just his second start since the move to the Toffees and time is running out for him to make the desired impact.

With Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling to score, he would have had a genuine chance to force his way into the starting line-up if he could stay fit.

He could find his playing time limited even if he stays fit, with the Blues seeking attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window.

However, it is unfair to criticise the club for not moving for Delap. He cost £20million and Broja is a loan deal.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing – nobody knew the former Manchester City youth ace would have the kind of impact that he has.
