Marvin Mehlem: Hull City sign former Germany youth international - BBC Sport

Hull City to let 27-year-old head out the exit door

Hull City midfielder Marvin Mehlem is set to join Paderborn on loan, as per a report by HullLive.

Hull City will let the 27-year-old move back to Germany on an initial temporary basis until the end of the season.

Mehlem, who joined the Tigers in the summer transfer window, has made 16 appearances in all competitions in this campaign since his move to England and has chipped in with three assists.

Their boss Ruben Selles has said, as per HullLive: “I gave permission for him to travel to Germany to go and close some details for his loan to a team in Germany. His loan move is not ready yet, but it should be in the coming hours or days, and it is one of the things we are looking at. We should be able to replace him with another player who can come and help us and make us more competitive.”

Hull City signed Mehlem under their former manager Tim Walter to bolster their midfield ranks.

He penned a two-year deal with the East Yorkshire outfit but hasn’t been able to make an impact.

After joining the Tigers, he told their website: “I’m very, very happy and very excited to meet all the fans, all the team players and excited to win many games.

“I started playing football in my hometown and went to Karlsruher, where I met Tim Walter for the first time when I was 14.”

Mehlem rose up through the academy at Karlsruher and that was where he first crossed paths with Walter.

The ex-Germany youth international broke into their first-team as a youngster and went on to play 11 times.

Darmstadt then snapped him up in 2017 and he went on to become a key player for his previous club.

He made 191 outings and fired 21 goals altogether, helping them gain promotion to the Bundesliga in 2023.

They were relegated from the German top flight last term and he subsequently left for a new challenge.

What now?

Cutting ties with Mehlem will free up space and funds in Hull City’s squad to pave the way for new arrivals.

They need to let some players leave to clear the room for reinforcements as they look to avoid relegation to League One.

Paderborn are currently sat in 6th place in the Bundesliga.2 table but are only three points off Koln at the summit.
