As coach Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders prepare for the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Liberty Bowl later this month, they’re hard at work on the recruiting trail. After quarterback Jake Strong entered the transfer portal, Tech needed to address depth at signal-caller. And on Monday, they notched a huge win with the commitment of Frenship High School’s Holden Phillips. Frenship High School has scheduled an announcement on Tuesday to make it official. While the three-day early signing period ended on Dec. 6, Frenship coach Jay Northcutt says Phillips will enroll in January at McGuire’s request. “He’s a pretty special player at that position,” said Northcutt, whose team went 10-2.
“He’s the type of kid that can do the normal things really well, but I think the thing that really makes him special is his ability to make the uncommon play. He can buy time. He keeps his eyes downfield really well. … He’s just a very dynamic player.” Phillips threw 57 touchdowns to just seven interceptions this year en route to a 4,453-yard season. Earlier this month, the Red Raiders signed Frenship wideout Leyton Stone, who amassed 1,488 yards on 70 catches to go along with 29 touchdowns.
Over the weekend we learned quarterback Behren Morton will miss the Liberty Bowl due to shoulder surgery.
