Regis Le Bris drops possible hint on long-term Sunderland future
Regis Le Bris has shone during his first few months in charge of Sunderland, perhaps performing better than most expected him to.
Coming out of the November international break, Sunderland find themselves in 1st place of the Championship table, having already put 31 points on the board after 15 games.
During the summer, Sunderland appointed Regis Le Bris who’d overseen Lorient’s relegation from Ligue 1 the season prior.
Expectations from fans were reserved, especially given the fact that Sunderland sold Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town during the summer transfer window, and didn’t sign a direct replacement as such.
But a few months into the season and Le Bris is a beloved name at the Stadium of Light. He’s completely galvanised the playing style and the mood among supporters, setting the bar high ahead of the second half of the 2024/25 season.

Regis Le Bris drops possible hint on long-term future at Sunderland
Le Bris recently gave an in-depth interview with The Sun. In which, the 48-year-old discussed a number of subjects, even giving a potential hint towards his long-term future at Sunderland.
Sunderland handed Le Bris a three-year contract during the summer. But there was a sense that the Sunderland owners had finally made a longer-term appointment with previous appointments of Alex Neil and Tony Mowbray in particular looking like appointments for the there and then.
Le Bris explained how he likes the challenges of long-term projects, but that he constantly needs ‘something else to grow’.
He said: “I wanted to discover new cultures, environments and languages.
“I’m just curious and, when I’m in the same environment for a long time, I like working on a long project but need to be fed new elements to learn.
“If it all just stays the same, then I’ll need something else to grow, keep the energy and connect with other people.
“It was a whole new experience and I was aware that it would be different – but I liked that difference and was prepared for that.”
The ‘something else’ that Regis Le Bris needs at Sunderland is obvious
Like any manager, Le Bris is highly ambitious. It looks as though he’s ready to lock in for the long-term at Sunderland, but his comments above may prove that he needs regular new challenges.
And it may be obvious that the next challenge for Le Bris is Premier League football. If he achieves promotion in say, the next two seasons, he could well be with Sunderland for many years to come.
But if the Black Cats miss out, and especially if it’s because of player sales for example, and not through the fault of Le Bris, it seems as though the lure of a potential Premier League approach could prove strong.
And possible Premier League interest could be there if he continues to impress with Sunderland in the Championship.
The Sunderland owners need to back Le Bris, give him all the tools he needs to achieve promotion and help him fulfil his potential, as he’s clearly a very talented coach, and a good fit for the Black Cats.
